It's a coincidence. The films aren't made by the same people and don't star the same actors - they just happen to be about the same subject.

This happens fairly often in Hollywood - two or more films will come out at the same time on the same subject. Think of Armageddon and Deep Impact a few years ago, or during the 80s when there was a glut of films about children magically becoming adults (Big, Vice Versa, Freaky Friday, etc).

Well, the first film captured almost exclusively Capote in his mental and emotional state while he wrote 'In Cold Blood' and was almost purely a performance piece for Philip Seymour Hoffman. I thought it was an outstanding film, so gratifying and challenging and provocative. That, and the performances were phenomenal.

The other film, Infamous, is also centered around the time Capote wrote the book, but focuses much more on the relationships he had with his peers. He was a socialite, after all, and a very popular literary figure (he wrote Breakfast at Tiffany's and was notorious for his feuds with fellow author Gore Vidal). Infamous I heard wasn't as good overall, but the acting is top-notch. The cast is more recognizable, but the direction not nearly as intimate.

perhaps the first one made so much money that the prodcuers, the studio, the writers thought there was a good chance to rake in yet more cash fromt he same idea

alternatively it could just reflect the lack of fresh ideas in the film & TV business that they feel thay have to do remakes
