My family and I are going to go to Alaska sometime this spring or summer, possibly sooner. We live in Oregon. What type(s) of paperwork (if any) do you have to present to the people at the Canadian border? We will be going up through Washington and then into British Columbia, Canada, then to Alaska. I have heard that you need to have certified birth certificates, but is there anything else you need to bring to show them? Do you have to have a passport? And what about pets...do they (the people) need to see proof that pets have had their rabies shots as well as their other shots? And going from Canada to Alaska...do you present all this same paperwork or none at all? What is the procedure for doing all of this? I know this is a lot of questions, but I really need to know ASAP. Thanks.

The more forms of identification that you can present to the Canadian and American border officials, the better!

Driver's licenses are easy to forge, as are birth certificates. In the absence of any other forms of identification, they might be excepted -- but they might not.

It would probably be best if you contacted the immigration and naturalization service about getting back into the United States and the Canadian border protection agency about getting in Canada.

I can only speak about traveling by driving. As of this month, you must show your USA passport when you go in and out of the USA.
