Manual transmissions tend to be cheaper than autos. Most manual transmission cars get better gas mileage than their auto counterparts.
Additionally most manual transmission cars make better use of the engine's power because they are directly linked to the engine via a clutch, rather than via a torque converter like an auto trans.
With a manual you're always in the gear that you want to be in, and you can downshift when stopping to help save brakes.

better gas mileage depending on how you drive, automatic continually "slips" so your engine turns but your transmission doesn't turn at qutie the same speed. except in and overdrive transmission with a lock-up torque convertor which will lock the engine and transmission together at a certain vehicle speed. Automatic does provide torque multiplying at vehicle launch which can help negate the manuals advantage of gas mileage. Manual is also less expensive to make. manuals are more satisfying to drive with. manual transmissions are stronger in some cases than automatics for less price and complexity. Manuals came first so they are better?
