im a little confused....when you throw a football, do you use mainly your rotator cuff muscle(s?)? because i've been working out my triceps thinking that the strength of the triceps determine how far you can throw a football (with disregard to technique, etc)
question: is rotator cuff muscle strength more important than tricep strength when youre wanting to throw a football further?

I looked up this web page for you. Its all about the mechanics of throwing a football. I hope you will find it helpful.

Actually, it is more your Pectoral that you use. The best I have ever heard the mechanics described and seem is commentary on Tom Brady. He says that on every throw he plants his right foot, steps forward with his left and then reaches back and out stretches his arm and then does the motion of putting a seat belt on. So, if you want an idea of what your action should be then watch the Championship game Sunday and take note.

To explain better: The throw actually starts from the plant of the right foot. This then continues up the legs to the left leg going forward, then the hips turning to face your target and then using your abs and pecs to bring your arm through straight, snap your wrist at the time of release to get the spin on the ball and then follow your arm through to your opposite hip as if putting on a seatbelt.

It's like a golf swing doesn't just come from the arms. The legs, hips, shoulders and arms all coil up and then at the same time you uncoil everything and bring it through to hit the ball.

Also, a jump doesn't just come from the calf muscles. It's the quads, hamstrings, abs and arms all crunching up and then exploding out to stretch and reach for height.

Ya it is coz, you use your wrist while throwing. Next time look closely when they show the close up of a throw.
