I have my six week check up tomorrow, and I am considering getting the copper IUD. What are your experiances with it? Any side effects, discomforts? I am allergic to latex and don't want to take hormones so this seems like a good option to me, Ijust want to get a general opinion on it. Thanks.

I have the Paragard (http://www.paragard.com) and I LOVE it. So far, no problems. I did notice for the first two menstrual cycles after having it put in, I bled *slightly* heavier, but it wasn't anything to worry about. Now, my periods are back to normal.

No cramping, infections, etc. I really have no complaints. A lot of people say that the string that comes out pokes their husband during sex. My husband said this isn't the case. My ob/gyn left it long enough that it actually curls around the lip of my cervix, so it's not a problem. :)

As for the side effects that are the most common, I believe they're cramping, heavier than normal bleeding, IUD falling out. You can get an infection (if the IUD pokes a hole in the side of the uterus), but this isn't very common.

My ob/gyn had me come in during my period (so my cervix was already open and he wouldn't have to pry it open, lol) so having it put in was painless. Took less than 10 minutes, and insurance picked up the tab 100%. Plus it's good for 10 years.

If you decide you want to have kids, you're fertile pretty much as soon as they take it out. With hormonal birth control (pill, patch, shot, etc.) there's often times an "adjustment" period to get back to normal. You've been pumping your body full of artificial hormones, so your body has to get rid of them and "straighten up." :) Not true with Paragard.

I've had a Mirena IUD for 6 years. After 15 years on the pill, I couldn't take the hormones anymore. The hormones in the Mirena have not been bothersome at all. I chose the Mirena over the copper IUD because the copper IUD often increases the bleeding and cramping whereas the Mirena IUD decreases it. The insertion hurt (as well as the removal and re-insertion as it is good for 5 years so I had mine replaced last year). My periods were erratic for the first 4 or 5 months, but have been heavenly short since then. I am a childfree woman in my 30s. The doctor didn't question my decision for the IUD at all despite my never having (and probably never wanting to have) children. Good luck finding the option that is right for you.

Hi i'm from austrialia, and over here i dont think they even insert copper iud's anymore due to the large number of wemon who have trouble with them. I have the same problem as you do and was thrilled to hear that a new device became available over here a few years ago, i think it would probably be available to you too. It is called a mirrana, It is much the same it is an IUD, but it is plastic, and delivers a minute dose of hormones for a period of seven years, and it is safe for you with your allergies. You need to go to your ob to have it implanted under local anastetic, it takes about 25 min and is relatively painless, after this it stays in place for seven years and then you have a new one put in. It has the added bonus of stopping your periods too, which as the recent studies have shown is good for our bodies with reguards to reproductive cancers.I had mine inserted 13mths ago and its the best decision i have ever made!! also if you find that it dosent suit you for any reason, you just have it removed in much the same way! I dont know how your health system works over there, but the whole thing was taken care of by medicare,ie;no cost to me. Your wemons healtrh nurse or GP will be able to tell you more. I hope this helps and that you have the product available to you as it has helped me imensley!! I was actually horrified to hear that you were thinking of having the copper7!! it makes you wonder why the difference in oppinions between our fair countries?? Good luck to you!!

I am wearing the IUD, for about 3 years now and its been great with me. Yes you might actually bleed a little more but it doesn't bother me. They told me that I might have alot of bad cramping, but so far I have been able to handle them, they don't bother too much. I really recommend you to wear it, because you don't have to worry about pills and hormones. The IUD doesn't have any latex so you might actually like this method. The best thing is you can wear it up to 10 years.

I had IUD's for many many years....I'm now 45. I found them very trouble free and wonderfully reliable. The copper in the IUD makes for a "hostile" environment in your uterus, so that eggs cannot implant into the lining of the uterus....all to make them more effective. You will feel a bit of discomfort when they are inserted and will probably experience a bit of spot bleeding and cramping similar to period pain.....but once they settle in they are unnoticable. I would have loved to have continued having them.....but apparently at my age...other choices were preferable and so I had Implanon inserted in my arm. Oh...one other thing, you may have heavier and more clotted periods.....that is their only downside from my experience.

do your homework, while IUDs are effective in most women, they can cause problems. My aunt had one inserted and it nearly cost her the ability to have children when it "migrated" and did some extensive damage to her uterus and fallopian tubes. she had difficulty conceiving because of the scar tissue and only after an operation to clear it up was she able to conceive.. once..after that she never could again. I am sure there are many success stories also, but after that, i would never consider one if i were still having kids or wanted any in the future.

I had one sister in law who had it. She said it was ok, but whe she sat down she could feel it and it felt uncomfortable. I've also heard from other women instances of it slipping out and tearing the uterus. My other sister in law wanted to get one but her husband stopped her because his ex wife ended up being scarred for life from it and being unable to have children. No kidding, after 10 years of marriage, they had none.
