You can start by explaining that there were a lot bad things going on in the world. Some of them, like the bombing of a US Embassy, the Bombing of the US Cole, the first bombing of the World Trade Center were attacks against the US, but we didn't have a president when those things happened that cared enough about what the world would be like when you were born to do anything about them. Then 911 happened and luckily we did have a president then that was willing to take on the task of trying to make the world a better safer place for you and for your children too. It meant that Americans had to understand that in order for him to try to make this a safer world for you, we would also have to do our part by being willing to accept things that were necessary for them to do their job---longer waits at airports, searched luggage, and reading suspect mail, etc. Most "thinking" Americans didn't really like the idea but we accepted it because we couldn't keep yelling 'PROTECT US, PROTECT US. BUT DON'T DO ANYTHING TO INCONVENIENCE US WHILE YOUR AT IT!!!" We did it because we love you and we want you to be able to grow up and live in the greatest country in the world like we did. And remember, if you don't have anything to hide, someone reading your mail really isn't a problem. And also remember, kids. Freedom isn't Free.

That we [Americans] allowed the act to keep child killers out of our country. That even the opposition to it found no real basis for opposing it. When asked who in the opposition, I'll point to an article and say "why, at least two extremists, here let me show you". And with that show these quotes.

Sen. Dianne Feinstein stated: "I have never had a single abuse of the Patriot Act reported to me. My staff e-mailed the ACLU and asked them for instances of actual abuse. They e-mailed back and said they had none." Sen. Joe Biden said at a recent hearing that "the tide of criticism" being directed against the act "is both misinformed and overblown."

The first thing I will explain to them is that intercepting suspicious mail is something that did not originate under President Bush's administration. It is something that has been practiced for decades.

Most importantly I will explain to my Grandchildren that along with freedom comes responsibility. The responsibility that each one of us as citizens may have to make sacrifices from time to time for the sanctity and security of our country. They will know that it is their duty to the country, not the other way around.

As we grow older, we realize that between black and white, there are a lot of grey areas, even darker or lighter grey. We also understand nothing is perfect and there are always some bad apples among many good ones.

Well while a president is supposed to serve the people of the Country, he could make mistakes or become dictatorial. Among all the presidents, there are good ones and bad ones too.

Bush the master of lies that can't be proved and that he will never be judged for in a court of law, it is a well known fact that kid's learn by example as dad does and says thereby go the children just be you self honest and truthful...
When your kids ask you that question tell them how you see it and teach them that, that is not the way you want them to be they will listen to you all kids especially boys want to be just like there dad...but that also applies to girls as well!
They will know the reason when they are understanding the answer and correlating that with the actions in question...

Assuming that I'll even live long enough to know my grandchildren, I highly doubt they will be intelligent enough to come up with that semi-astute response.
