Dreams are the by-product of our daily thoughts. So whatever we think in the state of consciousness gets stored at the back of our mind. Lets say you think that John loves you and he likes the way you are. It is a strong probability that the very next time you will see a dream in which John is looking at you while smiling...
This can be a possible reason for what we see...
But we all know dreams are quite abstract and we can't put any solid justification for our dreams....

well i think its obvious in life, and in dreams, that actions speak louder then words. whoever this person in your dream way, what did they do? its still significant though, that he/she didn't speak, just smile... why? was s/he watching you? Did you know the person?.. it could be that if you didn't know who it was, it may have been representative of some parental figure, authority figure, or even you, watching yourself. in any case, it seems to me, that whoever this may represent, it speaks positively in either your relationship with this person or in how you see your life in whatever regard your dream was conserning itself with.
really without more details its hard to give an accurate interpretation, but I think overall its a good thing. smiles are always good (unless its someone smiling at another's pain)...

actually we do dream of people saying things.. or rather acknowledge that they're saying things much like a child does with a doll or action figure.
