Most Ohio State players say it because the official name of the school is "The Ohio State University".
Of course it is showboating, but at least it is correct.
University of Miami players say "The U" which means absolutely nothing.

There are two types of Universities....
Universities, and 'State Colleges'...... For example.......In california....there are (not to name all of them, just a few)
The University of California (Bears)
University of Southern California (USC)
As you can see, those two have the university part FIRST.
Now,
there are also places like
Sacramento State University
Sonoma State University
or take Oregon for example....
University of Oregon & (ducks)
Oregon State University (beaver)
These are different universities, in different cities!
Hope that clears it up!

Because there is only one university whose official name begins with 'The', and that is "The Ohio State University".
Everyone who is too dumb to comprehend that that is the official name of our university, thinks that we are so much more conceded about our university than they are of theirs, and so they add 'The' to the name of their school, in an effort to mock us. We could not care less what they think....
GO BUCKEYES!!!!!!!!
