I have a very uncommon last name, but it appears in early historical accounts of the conquest of Mexico, but disappears shortly thereafter.
I speculate my ancestor might have been a nobler man than most from his time. He probably settled down with his family and the rest is history.
There were a lot of conversos who immigrated to Mexico, but mostly to Northern mexico yet I still checked for ethnicity, but it is neither Muslim or Sephardi Jew.

I check because of late night curiosity. Also, it's perplexing how records indicate only 3000 families with my last name. Not sure what that means.

My married name is also unusual; though the family hails from Mexico, the name is actually Basque (from a region between France and Spain).
Since there is a family crest, I assume they were at least "landed" (had property), and I know the name did not appear before the 1600's. Other than that, it's all speculation.
What specifically are you researching it for?

Am I reading your question properly? You don't want links to two genealogy forums devoted to the Batten surname, nor to another that has 15,000 Batten entries, 51 of which have birth place TX, you only want to hear from YA users who are doing the Batten family? It is your choice. There are only two or three dozen people who answer queries here, and the Q only stay around for five days. Best of luck! ======================== Added later: R. C. Batten wrote, saying he would consider some links after all, and that his post was poorly worded. I sent him links to RWWC, GenForum and Ancestry's query pages.

Nobody researches my last name because i don't even have any last name. But most people will ask, why I have only one name and how come i don't have last name? Because I have my name and the word daughter of and then my father's name. I am happy to be that way, because people will call me by my name, and at the same time I bring along my father's name.... Anyway, no matter your last name is common or uncommon, it's still your name that you have to bring for the entire of your life. SO, you have to be proud of it.... :)

Yes and its very uncommon. Its french and people who speak English seem to be completely unable to pronounce it. The most distant person I know about with the same name is a watchmaker in Quebec

My surname is Scots. But the British forebear of that name came from the south coast of England to Canada. Regrettably, records were destroyed by war damage.
