Whatever it is, it can be prepared in under 30 minutes, it is probably high in sugar, salt, fat, and cholesterol, and it probably tastes like a slice of heaven.
If I were to lay out an American meal for someone who wanted to experience popular U.S.A. culture, you're right though to suggest fast food - it would probably be a nice hamburger, fresh, hot french fries salted to taste and served with ketchup on the side, and an ice-cold Coke.
Maybe other countries claim the hamburger and fries as their own, but only in America can you get them done right.
It's interesting though, because regions in America are more known for certain types of foods than others, and I'd have to say that you'd get a better taste of America by sampling the food in each different region. This country really is a melting pot, and the variety of great eats is staggering.
In Boston: Clam Chowder
In Maine: Lobster
In Cleveland: pierogies
In Georgia: peach cobbler
In Texas: Tex-mex foods with salsa
In Wisconsin: cheese
In Seattle: seafood, and also good coffee
And in California: fresh vegetables and great wines.

American cuisine uses Native American ingredients such as turkey, potatoes, corn, and squash, which have become integral parts of American culture. Such popular icons as apple pie, pizza, and hamburgers are either derived from or are actual European dishes. Burritos and tacos have their origins in Mexico. Soul food, which originated among African slaves, is popular in the U.S. as well. However, many foods now enjoyed worldwide either originated in the United States or were altered by American chefs.

i think that the national dish would have to be the traditional thanksgiving dinner with Turkey, mashed potatos, dressing, cranberry sauce.. and then according to your locale.. all the other stuff, like, in the south, we have rice and butter beans, collard greans, sweet potatos, and...
apple pie is suppose to be "as American as"

I won't be preachy about our diet, or try to propagate my own culture, but the true national dish is Yankee Pot Roast, just like grandma used to make.
