I believe that it is Albuquerque, NM :Due to our high desert elevation, the days will be warm and the evenings cool in the spring and summer. It is not uncommon for the temperature variation from day to night to be 40°F.

Good question! I think it must be a city with high elevation, because that means, well, several things. I'll skip that and just say that it must be either Albuquerque (ABQ), Denver, or Salt Lake City (SLC) since I'll assume, rightly or wrongly, that you didn't want to consider "smaller" cities such as Colorado Springs or Cheyenne (even though CS is nearly as large as ABQ).
I looked at the average max temps and min temps for 4 months for each of those cities (at National Weather Service Forecast Offices), Jan, April, July, and Oct, subtracted the differences, and averaged the differences. The 5 numbers under each city are the differences for Jan, April, July, and Oct, in that order, followed by the average of the first four numbers. This is no scientific analysis, by any stretch, so take it or leave it!
For ABQ: http://www.wrcc.dri.edu/cgi-bin/cliMAIN.pl?nmalbu
23.8, 29.2, 27.1, 27.0=26.8
Denver: http://www.wrcc.dri.edu/cgi-bin/cliMAIN.pl?co2220
26.9, 26.9, 29.1, 29.5=28.1
SLC: http://www.wrcc.dri.edu/cgi-bin/cliMAIN.pl?ut7598
17.0, 23.2, 29.7, 25.6=23.9
So Denver wins! :D

I do not know for sure ... but I was in the Air Force in Fairbanks Alaska and I do know the lowest temperature ever recorded there was 60F below and the highest was 94F ... so that is a difference of 154F ... so it has to be in the running. Phoenix is 122F highest ever and 17F lowest ever so it is not close. Any City beat Fairbanks?

Good qestion. I believe the answer to your question is Death Valley, CA. Night is often said to be the winter in the desert because of the extremes in temperature from day to night.

I'm just guessing . . .
but I'm going to say Phoenix or somewhere in Southern California, such as Palm Springs - around that area.
