Its good that you escaped such an abusive situation... The nature of bipolar disorder is episodes of mania (which are either feeling extremely elated or angry) that are followed by depression (which may explain his alcoholism). If he is that far gone it would be best for him to get psyciatric help, his life seems to have already fallen apart. Bipolar disorder is a serious thing.

Well the simple answer is Bipolar is a mood disorder that causes people that have it to have changes or shifts in mood not under their own control.

These moods range from manic when they are elated, and full of energy to depressed, when they are tired, and have no energy to do anything.

Time periods for these swings range from every few months, to every few hours in a day, in rare cases. It all depends.

It's a tough road to be in a relationship with one. And the moods
change fast, sometimes, stress makes it worse.

I won't say that someone who is Bipolar will hurt you, but their behavior is certainly unpredictable at times.

If he's drinking it is going to be much worse.

Look up websites like NIMH National Institute of Mental Health.

Good luck.

Bipolar disorder (manic-depressive illness) is a mood disorder, which means that the symptoms are disturbances or abnormalities of mood. Major depression is a more common illness, the symptoms of which are mainly those of 'low' mood. Bipolar disorder involves episodes of both serious mania and depression. The person's mood swings from excessively 'high' and irritable, to sad and hopeless, and then back again, with periods of normal mood in between. Different from normal mood states of happiness and sadness, symptoms of manic-depressive illness can be severe and life threatening. However, because many artists, musicians and writers have suffered from bipolar illness, the effect of the illness has sometimes been trivialised, and regarded in some way as beneficial for artistic creativity. In fact, for those afflicted with the illness, it is extremely distressing and disruptive.
