What is the best route to take when driving from New York to New Orleans?

Time isn't a problem, I'll be travelling with two children aged 5&6 and would preferably like to take a route with plenty to do on the way. I'd like some advice on activities along the way.

The best route is through Knoxville/Chatanooga/Birmingham...for activities you should but an XM radio, they have kids channels that will keep them occupied. Also a portable DVD player is fairly inexpensive and get alot of movies for the kids or each time you stop for gas or food, get a new movie for them to get them occupied.
