Where can I get a generic driver for all kinds of modems that runs on all popular flavours of Windows like 98,ME,2000, XP etc

There isn't such a thing. Like you said, there are all kinds of modems, but each kind run very much differently than the rest. And even then, among the modems that come from the same company, each model and make require different drivers. As a result, you can't find a "generic" driver for all kinds of modems, only modems who were made off the same model and make, but modified by a third company or re-released as a different name.

Like the person below me said, you select one that closely resembles the one you have. That's not going to guarantee that it's going to work, but like I said, that driver that closely resembles the one you have isn't a "generic" driver that's going to work for ALL KINDS OF MODEMS, only those that closely resemble the one you have.

Using WinXP? Its built in. In device manager, select the device that you want to use the generic driver for, double click it, go to drivers tab, re-install drivers button, then choose "i'll specify the location" and if its a modem, it will show you the list of available modem drivers, there are a few generic modem drivers, just pick the one that best suits your modem, like Hayes compatible 56K or something.
