Really it depends what you want from the animal. I've had both and I love both but if I had to choose I'd pick cats (although if I had to choose out of any animals birds win hands down!)
Cats are more independent while dogs are more reliant on you. That doesn't mean cats need less care, they just don't need your attention as much as dogs. Cats are quite happy to sit and look out a window or stalk something only they can see on the floor or simply sleep. If you enter the room a cat will come up to you for attention but if you're not in the giving mood they will leave you alone (or try to sit on you and rub against you until you push them away :P) They can quietly sit on your lap and be patted and in general cats are quieter (unless you don't get them desexed, in which care all hell will be on you)
Dogs are more attention needing. You have to take them outside to do their business. You have to walk them for exercise. They are also more messy and smelly. Dogs hunt in packs where having a smell can scare prey and help manipulate them to the advantage of the pack. Cats hunt alone and so need to stalk and sneak up on their prey. Thus cats keep them selves clean while dogs go and role in yucky stuff.
Dogs will generally want to play with you more and are more boisterous. For older people this isn't a very good idea. For example when my grandma comes to visit she can't go out the back because our two dogs will jump on her for 'hugs'. Her skin is thin so she gets bruises and our larger dog might knock her over. Cats can scratch you, but that's about it.
Dogs bark. Depending on the personality and type of dog, they might bark a lot. In a town area this might be a problem if your animals is making excessive noise. however some dogs don't make much noise really, it all depends on they type of dog, their perosnality and where you live.
Dogs get smellier as they get older. Cats dribble when they're happy.
Both are very expensive in terms of vet bills (dexsexing, vaccination, emergency care etc) particularly as they get older and get problems such as arthritis, teeth becoming loose, obesity etc.
If you sit down with a dog it's more likely to jump all over you and lick your face and want to run around and play. If you sit down with a cat it's more likely to rub up against you for pats, curl up i your la and fall asleep purring, possibly kneading your leg (which can be slightly painful!) Really it's personal choice on what you think are good things and what you think are bad. Good luck!

I am all for dogs. Cats are a little creepy in my opinion, it's like, you wake up, and they are staring you in the face as if they've been watching you sleep all night, and dogs on the other hand, you wake up, and then you have to wake them up! And yes, both animals shed, but cat hair is finer than dog hair, that is why more people are allergic to cats than dogs. If you are into that whole "litter box" thing, then i guess you would like shoveling an animals crap around, or having it stink up the house, but i'd much rather just let my dog outside. If your yard is big enough, you won't even have to worry about cleaning up after your dog either. also, when you go on trips or whatever, you could take your dog with you, and not have to worry about it feeling awkward, while on the other hand cats are too territorial to enjoy being moved around often. And cats are everywhere, they get up on bookshelves and such, while dogs, well, they are almost always on the floor. I don't know how cats do with training as far as tricks go and all, but i know that it is pretty easy to train a dog. and last but not least, what if your house was broken into and someone tried to hurt you or your family, what would a cat do, meow? on the other hand a dog would try and do something, even if it were too small to really help. Cats are too independant, but at the same time, dogs arent needy, they just make you feel needed. That's just how i feel, but if you want, you can just go ahead and get a cat, and a dog!

I have always had dogs because they are very affection and seem to need to be around people. I have always thought that cats are just too independent and only want affection on their terms. I have always been a dog person, but recently I adopted a cat and I have to admit she is one of the sweetest pets that I have ever had. Still love my dogs and now I love my new cat.

Both are equally fine. But if you are living in an apartment, then perhaps a cat is preferable. Some people believe that cats aren't as affectionate as dogs; it's not true, they bond, care and give back just as much too. It's up to the owner to discover and respond. Some toy breed dogs tend to bark too much, but I guess that's the owners' responsibility to train them then!

Cat if you live in town, big dog if you live in the country, Cats are nice quiet animals and use a litter box so its less hassle. Dogs you have to take outside all the time if you have them in the house then you have to clean the yard because you dont leave it. Both cats and dogs shed fur all over. Dogs slobber all over too and need more attention than cats in my opinion. Dogs are owned and cats are the owners so they are less tedious.

It all depends on your lifestyle and what you want in an animal. If you are not home most of the day, I would avoid a dog. Dogs are pack animals and desire company. Cats on the other hand are more independent.

it truly is a puzzling question to respond to! It relies upon on what you're searching for in a puppy! i have owned (diverse) of both, and that i worked at a puppy save for quite a few years because the small animal professional. My famous are rats because they are so pleasant and continually have such distinct personalities. yet guinea pigs can be pleasant and exciting. Guinea pigs stay a lot longer (7 years or so) the position maximum rats generally stay about 2 years. i have had them stay a lot extra, and also a lot less. Rats are not as annoying weight help application-sensible. i have had mine stay off pellets in reality with the occasional supplemental snack right here and there. Guinea pigs have a extra strict weight help application, needing clean vegetables and diet supplements. Rats are extra needy with caging, they do a lot a lot extra useful in open/wire cages with diverse degrees while guinea pigs should be in a flat cage (no wire.) We did some really low priced caging for the piggies with some heavily changed plastic totes from wal-mart ($10) vs my diverse ($70) cages from petco/petsmart for the rats. Rats are many times extra handleable than piggies, who've an inclination to be so a lot extra shy even as it includes being picked up. yet once mine were out of their cages, they were ALL angels. Rats do a lot extra useful in social situations, so in case you're literally not keen to get better than one, or spend 0.5-hour coping with it each and each day, you'd be extra useful with a piggy. Granted, both opt for a tremendous type of coping with to make positive they stay hand-pleasant. heavily, i might want to bypass on for hours about those men. once you've any particular questions, be at liberty to deliver me an digital mail or i am going to grant you with my target sn. only stay away from hamsters and also you'd be nice.

HEY ROSIE,
i think you cannot go wrong with a cat....cats are self contained and the only think you have to do is empty the box occasionally.
dogs are great, too it's just getting past that puppy stage....once you can get thru that......anything goes.. no excessive barking please especially if you live in a condo or apartment...and when you take your dog for a walk in the condo area, please pick up after it...

Cat's are much easier to look after. As long as they a fed and have somewhere to sleep their fine. They have no loyality though. You could have one from being a tiny kitten and if it finds somewhere better to go it won't hesitate to move.
