A married guy who knows me, but not very well, but i know he is attracted to me told me 'i am in love with you' but i replied 'you can't be, you hardly know me' and he replied ' i was only joking'. Why would a guy 'joke' about something like that, seems a bit strange. What do you think? Your opinion wanted!

He was hoping that you would respond positively to his comments.
He wants to have sex with you, and rather than just ask you, he was trying to bait you out.
You shifted his plans with your reply; and all that he could do to save face was claim to just be joking.
Believe me, he was hoping that you would have flattered enough to let him have his way with you.

Married men never jokingly tell women they love them.
He said it for one reason only.
When he said that he loved you he was testing to see what you would say. If you had responded positively, he would have tried to find a way to have an affair with you. If you get med, he can say it was a joke.
After all he's married, right? A married man would never tell a woman that unless it was just an innocent joke, right?

i agree with the guy above me that said he wants to know about your reaction and it is a indirect way of getting you feels. the only way i would do the same thing is just that, learning about a person's feeling, but on a side note, becareful it might be a attempt in getting in your pants without much work, the fact that you got confused about this issue and that he is on your mind for a long period of time(whether you have good or bad feelings for him dont matter) means that you are already falling for his attempt. if i were you i would assume he is incapable to love untill you are sure he is in love with you (if hes already married and looking for a affair, then he really might be incapable to love)

For some people it's just an expression. It's a way of saying you're cool or I like you, so don't read too much into it, especially if he claimed he was joking and you don't know him well. Maybe just avoid him for a little while though.

Look at it this way..............if he wasn't joking, he wouldn't say so because if he in fact loved you, he wouldn't want to spoil things with you. However, stay away from married men, who try to flirt. It has nothing to do with love. He's just testing the waters to see if he can go for a swim.

hey I think people tend to hate the lives of those around them that have what they want. Personally wants and needs are very easily distinguished apart. I need my good half working with me and really I dont' want anything else.

Flirting with a guy that you know is married already wrong, so I didn't really read the rest of your Q.

Because men want their cake & eat it too.......trust me just ended an awful love affair. Dont persue it, you get nothing in the end but heartache. Its just a temporary excape from reality

cuz on some level he thought you were coming onto him and he's obviously a sickdogpig who doesn't deserve his wife and perhaps children if there are any; so you and he should just **** eachother and then die off somewhere in a hole where scums like you deserve to be dead.....
