The body is made up of cells and requires nourishment just like engines require fuel. The food we eat gets digested and absorbed by blood which in turn feeds the hundreds of cell in our body and the brain tells us that we are hungry and we have to eat food to stay alive and keep rolling.

different organisms r programed (or say made to) digest different kinda objects. like termites can digest wood (can u??), cattle can digest cellulose

if you could eat plastic or glass( don't try it!!!) and extract energy out of it then it'll be food for u.
