Because some of these people desperately need to know the truth, which is crueler to tell them that they stink or that they just need practice when they absolutely have no hope at all? He's ripping off the band-aid so to speak, but sometimes he does go too far.

He is not evil, the show needs someone to keep it on the ground and simon tells the truth a lot. I agree sometimes he is a little mean, but normally he's just down to earth. Plus he's kinda hot.
