My laptop lately has gotten to where it shocks me almost every single time i touch it, which had made me very paranoid that it's going to catch on fire or explode or something. It's a 2003, so it's about 3 years old. Nothing else in my house has been shocking me, so that makes me think there is something really wrong with my laptop. Now, i do my school on here, and have A LOT to get done in a short period of time, so i can not afford to trash it, and i definately DO NOT have money to buy a new computer, so what should i do? Could it be something that can be repaired, or is it something i do not need to worry about. Getting rid of it is the very last option right now since i need it so bad, and again. I can't afford a new one, i mean come on, i'm in school! Also, it doesn't just shock me when i first touch it, it will shock me almost once every 5-10 minutes, at least!

could it have something to with the fact that my battery quit working, so for almost the past year i have been using it without a battery and just plugged into the wall because my parents wouldn't buy a new one.

This a special option on Laptops so you not fall asleep with it in your lap and it fall on the floor. OK, maybe not.
Is there metal where you getting shocked? Most times it probably in the power supply. But, a Laptop use either a battery or AC wall adapter. Both are only about 12-18 Volts DC so it should not be dangerous. What you may need to try. Disconnect the AC wall Adapter; unplug from the wall and computer and use only on the Battery and see if it shock you. If not you may need a new AC Adapter, the old one may be going out. IF, it still shock without the Adapter, then remove the battery and connect the Adapter to see if it shock you. If, it not shock you then the Battery may be getting old and need replaced. This all I know to check. If it something with the Motherboard, Hard Drive etc. not much you can do. I doubt a Repair Shop can fix, without charging you out the Butt.
If, you worried about it blowing up. After you turn it off, unplug it from the wall and IF you want remove the battery. I think unplugging from the wall should be plenty.

are you referring to a shock like the kind you get when walking on carpet then touching something metal?
often hair care products and cosmetics cause an electrolytic condition, that causes unusual static buildup, so often women have this problem more the men.
try this use your laptop at the kitchen table provided its on tile, wash your hands before you use it, the moisture will cut down on static charge.
as an experiment try to use the laptop while its running on batteries, if its not plugged in to anything and you still get a shock, its just static and you have nothing to worry about.

good luck.

kindly get checked the power supply unit which is the most probable cause in case if your Lap top is in good order.
as the lapto works on pwer supply fo 12 volt there is no major chance for shockk hazard by itself if disconnected from mains

You are grounded. Try sitting on a rubber mat.

I honestly don't think that's safe at all.
I really think you should get that checked out, as soon as you can.
