the absolute best software i have came across is called DRIVE SCRUBBER by iolo technologies. if you go do a trial download of iolo's System Mechanic Professional, you'll get drive scrubber with it. providing your laptop has a floppy drive, or you can use a USB flash drive for that part, it makes a bootable disk that you pop in when the computer starts... this software will erase EVERYTHING on your laptop and then write zeroes for the entire capacity of the HDD, then reformat it, then write zeroes again... up to a total of 999 times. the US Government only rewrites their drives seven times, so the choice is yours. but your best bet would be the download of SMP and use Drive Scrubber.
depending on the capacity of your hard drive, it may take some time. i wrote zeroes six times to a Western Digital 20 gig hard drive and it took around 24 hours to complete.

Just formatting the drive won't get rid of everything on it if a good file restorer program is used. A free program called "Eraser" will do the job for you. It's available to read about and download at the below link.

Right click on any drive in My Computer and choose "Format"
Then choose "Quick format"
But don't format the drive that you'd installed Windows XP on or it will be deleted too

when you reformat a hard drive everything gets erased assuming you deleted that partition and and didnt reinstall a fresh os on a new partition. so reformatting is as clean as you're gonna get that hard drive.
