It drives all four but if they are not equiped with any traction aid then the tires with the least traction will spin so that usually leaves you with one in front and one in back.

The term'four wheel drive' is misleading in MOST standard 4WD vehicles. Standard differentials, both front, and rear only have one 'pulling' axle, depending upon available traction, USUALLY on the rear, it will be the right, and on the front,it will be the left. Now if you are referring to positive traction, all four wheels will 'pull'. In some of G.M.'s earlier 4W.D.'s, (the full time units) the transfer case acts similar to a differential, when the rear wheel slips, the front will 'take over' and keep the vehicle moving(traction permitting). These, of which I have owned a couple, are in my opinion, the best because you can shift(in range) on the fly( you do not have to stop to 'lock-in' the front hubs). These units were always in 4W.D., when you put them in '4W.D.' mode, you were merely locking the front and rear diff's together so both would 'pull' at the same time. Hope this clears up your question!

A four wheel drive, drives with 2 wheels unless the four wheel drive is engaged. In All Wheel Drive vehicles only one wheel is driving at one time, when one wheel looses traction one of the other wheels take over.

um no --- read the term 'four wheel drive' slowly to yourself - out loud if you have to - about 5 times.

Let's see... four wheel drive..... cars and trucks TYPICALLY have four wheels... let's see, that's two in front, two in rear... and 'drive' that means driving not just trailing... so....

I got it!!!

Four wheel drive means that there are FOUR wheels DRIVING and not trailing or rolling around with no power behind it.

what on earth got you thinking about 4 wheel drive being one front and one rear wheel driving and the other two rolling? I have to know.
