the answer is knowledge and love. That's why we are here, to learn all we can about the physical world we live in, and when we finally go home, we measure our progress against the plan we wrote for ourselves before we came here. If more lessons need to be learned, we come back again and again until we are all knowing, all loving, and like our creators. This is the higher power. The collective pool of all loving perfect knowledgable souls whose energy burns so bright...it could be the light we all are drawn to when we go home.

42 is an old trucker's slang for going home, so it really is the answer. The real answer is string theory. Dark matter condenses along lines of magnetism, twists itself into a knot from gravitational forces, and voila! the universe is born.
(terribly simplified, but I'm not a physicist either)
42 is a much better answer.
