As long as you don't step into those food courts in the shopping malls, they are expensive and not that fantastic. You may want to drop by Maxwell Hawker Centre and Smith Street Transit Market (located near to Outram MRT Station as the actual place is under refurbishment).
There are other places in the suburbs that provides good, cheap and nice food. It all depends what do you to eat, since Singapore is a multi-culture country.

As long as you stay out of commercial buildings and shopping centres, you will find that you can get quality food at very budget prices. We have coffee shops and hawker centres that sell quite a good variety of food, from local, to Asian and also to western styles.
You will find one wherever you may be. If you need some assistance when you are in Singapore, you can email me for some recommendations.

Any of the markets in a housing estate has an adjoining food court where you can eat a large variety of food at local prices.
For a more upmarket experience, go to any of the food courts that's found in shopping centres or malls. Prices may be 10% to 20% more expensive than the market.

Hawker centres is a fusion of local cultural food. So it's a must visit if you want to experience it. And it's cheap cheap. hehe
Food courts in shopping malls are really expensive and not much variety because it is controlled by big companies.

outram is a good place for cheap food, like the chinatown market (currently located near the outram mrt station) or maxwell market, look for hawker centres that do not have air conditioned and have not renovated before, they usually sell cheaper food compared to the food courts in shopping malls, hope this helps, cheers
