Why do people write books to make them intentionally difficult to understand?

I'm talking about authors like Elizabeth Gaskell. You have to make a conscious effort to understand it and to enjoy it. I liked Wuthering Heights cos that flowed naturally but some litereture seems so contrived.

I think those reasons you stated are exactly what makes literature so good. I don't believe authors go in with the intention of being difficult to understand. They go in with the intention of expressing their thoughts creatively.

Good authors ignite critical thinking. They don't just spoon feed a story. Yet, I know what you mean. Sometimes certain books do seem a little too complicated for their own good.

Authors like use metaphors and euphamisms to convey there ideals and values. It's a creative way of story telling. You are given a story that can be taken at face as simply an entertaining story or you can dealve deeper into it and pull out the underlying meaning. Most of the great storytellers worked these devices into their works. Many stories can give insight into the trials and tribulations of the times in which they lived, while others can give the authors most sincere feelings about life and our relationships with others. Literature is wonderful is you give it a chance to take to places you've never been before. I'm sure if you're asking this question you've been given an assigment on said literature, but if you get a chance you should pick a novel and read it in your free time and you will enjoy it much more than if you are forced to read them.

This is a really good question. What makes certain books difficult to understand arises from the fact that they are writing about a subject difficult to understand: the nature of reality and identity. Reading such books gives as a greater awareness of our own lives--and others--and so, makes us better people.

Most of the books that are like this were not written in modern-day times. (For Example... any "classic" by Charles Dickens) So, in the time period that they were written that was the style. (Charles Dickens novels were considered quick stories during the Victorian Ages)

Modern novels written in that style are written by authors who are trying to copy that old technique, for they think that maybe it will make their book more popular to scholars and read in schools, etc. like all of the other books like that.

lit is good because it helps you escape and can enlighten you about people in other times and places, which in turn might help you discover something about your world.

i don't know if people intentionally write things that are difficult to understand. who knows what any author's intentions are, other than to write something?
