About a month ago, I went grocery shopping. We had just moved and I had to stock a new pantry, refrigerator, and buy a lot of cleaning products, so the total was pretty high (about $300). I paid by check. When I got home, I discovered that the clerk (who was obviously a new employee) handed my check back to me with the receipt. I went back the next day to return the check.

What I am wondering is, if I hadn't found the check (or simply hadn't returned it), what would have happened? Would I have been charged for the groceries? Would the clerk be fired?

I'm not sure why, but I keep wondering about this. Any ideas?

It depends on the equipment they use at the stores. With some registers, when the cashier scans your check (and prints the endorsement info on the back of the check), their computer actually contacts the bank, verifies that the check is good and can be redeemed, and with some systems, actually automatically takes the money from your account through an electronic check. They really don't even need your paper check except as an audit trail, so they have the document with your signature on it authorizing the transaction.

i think he would get fired, but maybe he would remember that he did not take the check, when you would come to the store, they would ask you to pay, even he would not be there they do have cameras,so that way, they would recognize you,so you did the right thing not for only his sake but for you too.

his register would have been short $300.00 in check and they would have looked and looked for the chech...then he would have been taken off the register.
