Hey,

Can someone help me out with the problem above? The way I'm getting my answer, my teacher says it's a perfect square trinomial and is not a factor.

I am given the following choices:

2x + 9
2x + 1
4x + 3
2x + 3

Any help is appreciated; thank q very much~~!!!

First, thanks for those with the time to help explain this to me. I really, really appreciate it. The information is being very useful! =]

Second, I did spend time working on it and solving it with any methods I can basically come up with. So shut your mouth before you start telling me to do my part of the work. I am asking for help and explanation on how to approach the answer. I am not demanding for answer. Pathetic. Stop passing quickass judgment. And this is directed towards you, Annyeshan.

Since you have 4x^2 at the start and you know you will need a perfect square the first part of the equation has to be (2x+?). Because the square root of 4 is 2.

Now to get your second part you have to find a number that will
a) Have a product of 9 and b) Multiply by 2 twice to equal 12.
Also, since it is a perfect square it has to multiply by itself to equal 9.

Now that you know the rules of the second part it is obvious the answer has to be (2x+3).

If you want to check your work you can always multiply it back out to see if you are right. (2x+3)(2x+3)=4x^2+12x+9

This equation simplified is

(2x + 3)(2x+3)

You can prove this by the following
2x + 3
2x + 3
---------
4x^2 + 6x (by multiplication (FOIL))
- - - - - 6x + 9 (the - signs are just for format so ignore)
-----------------
4x^2 + 12x + 9 (by addition)

the answer is 2x+3

4x^2+12x+9

you have to FOIL out the answer: FOIL means first outer inner last, pertaining to the numbers in the problem...

remember that it is a perfect square

meaning the answer is really (2x+3)^2

(2x+3)(2x+3)=

(2x)(2x)=4x^2
(2x)(3)=6x
(2x)(3)=6x
(3)(3)= 9

then you collect like terms

4x^2+6x+6x+9= 4x^2+12x+9

hence the equation you started with....
