My girlfriend gives me roses sometimes and they always end up dying and never fully blooming. I use the flower food that comes with the roses. I began changing water daily. I cut the stem at an angle. Is there anything else I can do?

The first thing you need to know is what kind of roses you have -- if they are a hybrid tea, they will last a lot longer after cutting than a knockout rose, and English rose or a grandiflora, for example. Say, you might have an excuse here to buy another rose! The second thing is that you want to pick them very early in the day, before the heat. You can snip them with shears or scissors while outside, but when you get them indoors, you will want to angle cut them with a very sharp knife. Using scissors will bruise the cut area, causing the flower to break down sooner, which creates bacteria in the water. This bacteria is one reason flowers don't last in the vase. T You will want to add something that will retard spoilage. An aspirin, a life-extending floral powder, or a half teaspoon of bleach will all work. Don't put the flowers in warm water, but room temperature. Cold water may shock them and warmer water will cause them to bloom out faster.

I've also heard than an aspirin in the water is helpful. You should trim the stems daily under running water.

A very sharp knife so you dont pinch the watter follicles when you cut them. If they are pinched then they cant soak moisture and will die.
