If '1' represents a number in both cases, the answer is 2
If '1' represents a string in both cases, the answer is 11
If '1' represents a number in one case and a string in the other, the answer is a formatting error from your compiler.
If you really mean 'total of' when you say 'total of', the answer is '1+1'
Depends on the context of the question - you did ask a philosophy question rather than a math question and in philosophy, any question can be twisted around.
But that's the entire point of philosophy - to ponder deep thoughts in interesting ways.

Total or sum is an abstract concept created by Maths... in reality things can only be put together and not totaled up or summed up, because no two are absolutely identical in this universe.... even the two 1's you have written appear in different places on the page or screen meaning they are situated differently.
On that philosophy, the answer to your question is
1 and an-other 1
Maths is based on a BIG lie but helps us discover many deep truths... that's why it is the greatest tool for our knowledge and progress!!

Well it depends on the context. So, first let us know in what context you are asking that question.
In maths, 1+1 =2,
If you add two oceans (1+1), it will become one ocean.
If you add two similar minded people
1+1=1
If you add a male and a female where the male is impotent, they will remain "2". Otherwise, it can always be greater than 2.

The total of 1+1 is not to be taken lightly, for it concerns the fate of the universe and everything that we hold dear...like cupcakes. Men have been killed over this very same question that you pose here, along with various curious cats. I would advise you to withdraw from your inquisitive stance and step away from the computer...else dire consequences may transpire as a result.
Ah, whatever. It's 2.
God bless.
