Success does not come without hard work and overcoming many challenges. While facing the hardships they all feel unhappy but the inner voice wakes them up again and pushes them to go ahead further and overcome the hurdles. Such people do succeed in their aim and feel very happy about their success!
But the truth is, once they taste the success they keep trying for the next, which means their happiness is brief and their unhappy situations are many and stretched!
However, because of such successful people, who enjoy brief happiness in their life span, the common people enjoy the best of comforts in their life.
The best among those successful people, I would say, is "Mahatma Gandhi!"

what is meaning by success? Is it accruing of wealth? being famous? leader of a group?
I think all the objects and being in the universe are a part of eternal truth or reality which people call as God or in other names. The participation with eternal truth will vary according to the nature of the object or being. The participation of stone with eternal Truth may be meagre than a vegetative life.Animal life has higher participation than vegetative life.Human participation is the highest with the eternal truth since he has a 6Th sense which will help to make a decision independently than the natural rule.
So success of a man is the real participation with eternal truth which is hidden related to the society, country, world ,universe and so on.How much a person can reach, that much is his success. How much he can feel it that is his happiness.Even if some one had succeeded in some fields, his consciences cannot accept he will be unhappy. So when we say he is succeeded it may not be the truth.
So the best is to try to understand the rate of his participation with the eternal truth and accept the reality.Try to increase the participation with eternal truth. If so I am the best according to me .You are the best according to you.

Success gives happiness and failures make us unhappy.
But the best is to live beyond both happy and unhappy modes.
In other words, your mental status is not affected by success or failure.

Happy/Unhappy, Rich/Poor are relative and not absolute terms..
What you can best be is that you should be contended in what you have, and what you have to look ahead.
I don't find being rich/poor in anyones terms a benchmark for being happy.
Its just state of mind
