I'm the manager of a beauty supply, I have VERY high standards for my store and sales clerks, first of all I ALWAYS have in the hottest new products, and deals.... then i have them displayed so that people notice them! second, I always try to stay in stock on my hottest items, best sellers, and necessities.
my employees have to be trained to sell effectively, so I bring in product reps to do product knowledge classes.
I give samples, with coupons attached, and offer outstanding, friendly service!!
I try to stock a little of everything, including collectibles, and makeup, and hair extensions & supplies.
MOST OF ALL....... the store should be competatively priced, well stocked, clean, and a comfortable place to shop!!
I hope this helped!!!

Anything except Sally's Beauty Shops. There's a place I go to in Fort Worth, TX whenever I visit there. It's pretty typical of the ones I go to in other parts of the country. There's lots of light coming in the windows (usually the better ones are corner stores so they have windows on two sides) and there's an airiness to the place--shelves and cabinets painted white with bursts of color coming mainly from the products. I like a labyrinth approach to the product displays. By this I mean, when I walk in the door I immediately turn to my left and find products that may start with my head--shampoos, conditioners and then on to items dealing with facial needs--wrinkle creams, moisturizers, exfoliants. It continues to draw me into the store so I end up looking at products I may not have considered when I walk in the door. Things dealing with the feet may be in the very center of the store, or as I said, in the center of the labyrinth.
I want the "accessories" for want of a better term with the appropriate product--brushes with hair care or with the make-up, files with the hand or foot creams. Then, just when I think I'm finished and I'm approaching the check-out, I see the sale tables. I don't want them jumbled together, but maybe the smaller items attractively displayed in baskets. I want to feel the store is getting rid of them to make way for new items, not because they're inferior.
I want to see brands that I'll recognize from the better fashion magazines (high end) down to the ones advertised in Oprah, for instance, that may be as good, but costs a little less.
I don't want to be tackled by the sales associates the minute in the door. Once my eyes have adjusted to the layout, I'd like to hear a pleasant sounding hello, is there anything in particular you're looking for, or we have some great samples to show you when you're ready. (Studies show that people given samples are more likely to buy the product). After I've had time to look, then I like someone to come up and say, I see you're looking at, say, shampoo. Then ask if I have a particular problem with it and go on to recommend something. That should lead me right into asking for a matching conditioner. If the sales associates are smart and have studied a little psychology and the dynamics of buying, they can seduce me into buying something else I may not have considered--a new blow dryer, for example.
And please, have the prices listed discreetly somewhere on the bottle/jar or on the shelf. Also, a little blurb about a product that contains the latest mineral or vitamin or whatever it is that's being touted as best for your complexion/skin/hair. It's so embarrassing for some people to want the product, but it's a little more than they have or are used to paying. Get them into the store, get them used to the experts, and they'll come back. Oh, and it doesn't hurt to have testimonials from actresses, or aestheticians, or even from the company (as long as it's not too hardsell) somewhere in sight--but again, placed discreetly so it doesn't look like a Wal-Mart sign.
Have a few nice chairs or the benches with the rolled arms that you put at the foot of your bed around the store so the buyer can sit down to study the labels. Watch what she's buying and occasionally go up and offer to put her things on the counter--thus freeing up her hands to buy more. Run periodic clincs where you--by invitation (women sign up in advance or are notified through e-mail) show the latest products or maybe those that haven't caught on yet. Some women aren't good at doing manicures. Do one on that. Have one on the role nutrition plays with our bodies. You won't be selling vitamins, but you will sell creams that have shea butter or hemp in a body wash because you'll be telling them these items will counteract what they've already done to their bodies. It's all about Restoration and Preservation.
This is strictly and simply ego-stroking and doesn't do anything for the product, but when the purchase is rung up, wrap the bottles in tissue paper and put in a decent looking bag. One that looks like a gift bag--maybe a small example of the stores' logo or just its name and nice carrying handles. If I want plastic bags I'll go Wal-Mart or Target.
Sorry for going on for so long. I would dearly love to have a shop like this where I live. I'm tired of using catalogs where I really can't get a good feel for the item. With this rough winter we're all having, I can't travel as much as I'd like so I have to stretch out my purchases.
