I agree that the Idol judges are often excessively cruel and heartless. I don't particularily find the jokes all that funny or entertaining. I also believe it is a pretty sad state of affairs that the American's public has constantly proved that they love this kind of cruelty as entertainment. Afterall, American idol is one of the most successful TV shows nationwide.
That said, I can't feel too bad for the contestants. After all, they know full well what they are signing up for. Don't audition if you don't want to be ridiculed on national television. You deserve to be laughed at if you wait in line for days to audition for judges that will more than likely mock you on televison. It would be a little different if a kindergarten talent show judge decided to pull a Simon Cowell on the kids! The same goes for audiences; if you really think it is that terrible, stop tuning in and making it the number one showw in the country! That would probably be the most effective way of getting rid of the show. Also as nasty as the judges can be, it is unfortunately true that most people who dream of a life of stardom do not even remotely have the talent or skills to fullfill their dream. I personally think it is arguable more cruel to encourage a kid who clearly has no talent to pursue a dream that will ultimately let him down.

When you are going on TV, in front of millions of people, come on, YOU ARE GOING TO BE JUDGED. PLEASE....GIVE ME A BREAK.
I really think, after last night, that a lot of these people are "mentally ill". Either the whole program is a joke, or these poor people do not "know" WHAT THEY ARE DOING.....
Maybe they should just screen the contestants before they come on, but then it wouldn't be as funny....
There were only about three people that should have been on last night.

Well the way some of those people sounded & looked, they brought it on themselves.
I really dont think the ones in "Seattle" audition were even serious.
They should listen & look at themselves better before coming on a national show to audition for a shot in a million.

They do leave themselves open to abuse - some of them are pretty bad. However, I don't think it is fair how they treat some of the younger ones. A couple of years ago Simon was just awful to this poor, plain little 16-year-old and she was just balling. That is just cruel and no, I don't find it entertaining either.

I dont think its funny at all either. Especially judging their specific look, like the kid with the big eyes. I mean come on thats just too overboard for my taste. I laugh at the people who stink and don't know it, but not when the judges are azzes about it.

I agree. there are times when the judges go overboard and they insult the contestants based on their physical appearance. Somebody was compared to a monkey and a giraffe. These are personal attacks and is not at all entertaining.

well it is funny that someone who can't sing at all thinks they can get on the show and be the winner. i don't laugh at all of them, some of them it is kind of shocking that they really thought they were any good.
it is just a tv show, and these people know what they are getting into. for those under 18 the parents have to sign consent to the show...

why do you watch it?
I think that the people that audition for that know what they're in for, so I don't feel sorry for them
