I left Chicago for Detroit 3 years ago. It's horrible here. The economy is beyond dismal. EVERYONE is worried about losing their jobs. I lived in the center of the state and now am down by Detroit. Advanced degrees are frowned upon...I had to take my MBA off of my resume just to get an interview. Whatever you do, don't buy a house here if you think you're not going to stay at least 10 years. I lost $32000 to get anyone to buy my house up north...and it was a "steal" when I bought my beautiful 5 br/3 bath house for $120,000. Back in Chicago it would have been a half million dollar house. But in a city with an average listing time over 400 days (and that's not uncommon in this state) it was impossible to get anyone to take me seriously. I sold it to one of those "we'll buy anything" outfits and lost all of my equity. But there wasn't an alternative.

There's a reason that United Van Lines listed this state as having the most movers going out of state...you have to leave to get a job. Ford and GM just had major lay offs. Chrysler's not far behind. Dow Chemical has been laying off for the last 5 years. The ONLY part of the state with a halfway decent job front is over by Grand Rapids and it's not expected to last.

Michigan is a great place to visit, but don't move here.

Sure, on a trial basis maybe. It would be hard to leave sunny California for Michigan. But if the "pros" outweighed the "cons," then quite possibly, "YES!"

I've never been to Michigan, so I don't have any reason to live there.
