I live in an east side suburb of Detroit. I have also lived in San Francisco, Eastern Europe, and a few other places in the US. I can give you many reasons not to live in Michigan.

However, Michigan is sort of like two different states, or three different states if you also consider the upper peninsula. It would have been an easier question to answer if you could have given us a regional area in Michigan that you are moving to.

Also, I don't know anything about you. How political are you? Are you an outdoors kind of person? Are you looking for night life? Do you prefer more intellectual persuits? And you also are not helping by not divulging approximately how old you are.

Reasons I like living in Michigan:

1. I'm familiar with it, having lived here most of my life.

2. The beer is cold.

Reasons why I don't like Michigan:

1. Most blacks refer to Detroit as a "ghetto" city.
1. A. Of all major cities Detroit has the least amount of college educated inhabitants
1. B. Over 70% of Detroit's inhabitants are on some sort of assistance, whether it be welfare, disability, SSI, or whatever
1. C. Detroit's crime rate is continually off the sheet

2. A general observation, this ain't San Francisco... The Detroit area is primarily a "working" city, mostly blue collar. For my taste, there are far too many simple minded, unthought out emotional arguemtents to very complicated problems. There are far too many guns in this state and far too many people who seriously think that nuking Iran and Iraq is a real solution. Also you can extrapolate this neanderthal way of thinking to solutions for economic problems in government, what to do about Detroit, jobs moving over seas, and what to do with your neighbor's dog.

3. The Detroit Area is one of the most segregated metropolitan areas in the country. It was so bad in the 70's that if you watched the evening news, the new anchor would report a story as, "The head of Oakland County, L Brooks Patterson, a white, was reported to have said....., and this was refuted by Representative John Conyers, a black..." it's nuts here! Very soon you will realize there is more to life than black-white issues and auto companies...

4. The trends, new ideas, and styles tend to start in either coast, and move toward the middle. Michigan is about as sophisticated as a door hinge...

5. Michigan leads the country in the unemployment rate. Southeastern Michigan is a "one-horse town," as it lives and dies with the auto industry. (Oh by the way, if you drive a toyota? Get rid of it.) In the past year, the big three and their ancillary businesses have laid off close to 160,000 people --That was in just the last year...

Now along with this, I have no idea what living in Texas is like. I have a feeling that depending on where you live, some of what I said, could also be said for Texas, you just have to chage a few terms.

Now on the other hand, Michigan is a beautiful state and if you do hunt, or are into more outdoor endeavors, you will love it here. I even have to admit taking a week each summer and going to a place near Grand Traverse Bay, and just hanging out!

The complaints I conveyed to you involve attitudes attributed to southeastern Michigan. The economy sucks all over the state but there are a great many places to live around here, just not anywhere around Detroit.
