Bore.... is the cut in a block for the piston. Call the cylinder.
Bore also tells you the size of the piston in the hole.
Is measured across the hole. You can change the Bore by cutting cylinder open more. Boring out. or sleaving.
Stroke is the travel of the rod, that is connected from the crank shaft to the piston. You measure the stroke with the piston at top dead center as it goes down inside the cylinder til it stops and returns up. You can change the stroke using crank, rod or piston.

Almost all internal combustion engines have a piston that travels up and down inside a cylinder. Like a tennis ball inside a tennis ball can. The bore and stroke refer to the size of the cylinder. The bore is the diameter and the stroke is the distance the piston travels down the cylinder.
People who really know engines can use these figures to help understandhow the engine will perform. For the average person engine geometry (V-8, straight 6), displacement (2.5 Liters, 300 Cubic inches), horsepower, and torque are all the details we need to know about our engine.

The bore refers to piston size. The stroke is how far the piston moves. Increasing either or both increases power produced.

when you either have to rebuild your engine from wear, or just want to increase your horsepower, you can bore the cylinders, or cut cyl. walls, increasing width from 10-40over..but boring the cylinders and increasing piston size does not increase the stroke, you get that from changing your crank & cam
