A small amount for a start.
Please, all those reacting in horror at this advice, it is MEDICALLY SOUND! Infants suffering from reflux in particular do much better when their formula is thickened. Please make sure you have a solid understanding of medical issues when you counter sound medical advice.
I had it recommended to me when my son was only a few weeks old, and many others I have since networked with have found this has worked very well for their children.
My PAEDIATRICIAN recommended this, as did the paediatrician of those I later spoke to who had also experienced gastric reflux with their younger infants.
I don't like being negative, but to those who are hammering their opinions here as to not using any solids with infants under six months, please respect the opinion of qualified medical practicioners and paediatricians. They have had a lot of experience with treating infants and are qualified to do so. Most of us don't have that extensive training and qualification and should not be contradicting what paediatricans and doctors recommend.

My baby has reflux and I do mix cereal with her bottles. We started off with 1 tablespoon for 4 oz. As for those with the 6 month suggestions... Gerber's website suggests 3 months, or double birthweight for babies to start cereal.

"Every baby is different, so age is not always an indication.
Physical signs baby may be ready are:
Sits with support and has good head control.
Doubled birth weight and weighs at least 13 pounds
Continues to be hungry after 8-10 breast feedings or 32 ounces of formula in a day."

Although I am usually against adding rice cereal to bottles (feeding kids under six months solids at all, actually), in the case of severe reflux, even many pediatricians that are also normally against it recommend it's use. Apparently refluxy babies do better with thicker substances.

However, before you try the rice cereal, it might be an idea to increase the amount of feeds, but give her less each feed, as it's easier for them to digest smaller amounts more frequently, rather than larger amounts over a longer period of time.

Also, try to kep her as vertical as possible during and after each feed, as this will help her keep the food down a bit better.

Good luck.

Don't give a one month old cereal. There is NO benefit. Cereal does not make hem sleep through the night any longer than they would on regualr formula. Not only that giving your child cereal now could cause allergies and digestive tract problems. Also... speaking from experience as I had a doctor tell me to do this with my 2nd child at about the same age, they spit up WAY more. I don't even think she managed to keep most of it down. Get a new doctor. The only reason a doctor would tell you to mix cereal with formula for a one month old is becasue he doesn't want to be bothered with actually being a doctor, so I say you should tell him thats just fine, and move on to a better doctor.

Are you sure? I have never heard a doctor suggest this at a month old. In fact any doctor I have ever heard, says to wait till 4-6 months to start any type of cereals. I have known of people doing it, but not because the Dr. recommended it. That young it can upset their tummies or they can have an allergic reaction. Not trying to criticise by any means, just wanted to let you know what I've always been told.

My pediatrician wouldn't let me start feeding my baby cereal until she was four months old (4 to 6 is what all the parenting books say that I've read) and never put it in a bottle. They're more likely to choke. Maybe you should see a different doctor. If you're just going to a family doctor, get a pediatrician. They would know more about babies than a family doctor.

I did this with all 4 of my children. depending on the flow of the nipple, put enough ceral in the bottle so that when you turn the bottle upside down, nothing leaks out. usually a good amount is about a spoonful like a cereal spoon that is a good estimate. also, rice cereal works best because it does not clump like oatmeal cereal

This must be because she's still hungry after her feeds.
I'd start with one tablespoon and see how she goes on that. If still not sustaining her then increase a little but not much more as her tummy is still not strong enough to digest it if it's too solid. Make sure you have a relatively slow flow teat on the bottle and that it drips thorough with enough ease so she's not over sucking. It's just trial and error really.

you can buy nipples that have a tri cut in the top that will work for cereal in the formula. Check with the nurse to see how they want you to mix it.
