Is this even legal? I have never heard of it. My Friend Bitsy was saying that She hoped that She and Her Husband died together, because she couldn't bear to not be with him. I jokingly remarked that they should be buried in the same box. All of a sudden she had this strange look in her eye. Bitsy can be competetive, and I was recently discussing with her my plans for a 6 parcel burial spot in San Francisco. I honestly now believe that she will try to outdo me in the afterlife, and be buried in the same coffin as her husband. I know this sounds odd. Is there a precedent for this? Is it illegal? Is there a law in California that states that 2 people CANNOT be interred in the same crate? What if it were 2 men? Could I be discriminated against in death? I am building a large mausoleum, and I believe I can do whatever I wish behind those final closed doors, but what about the sleeping arrangements themselves? Is this legal????

Yes, it is legal.
I have seen two best friends buried together after a car accident, and a mother & child buried together (they were murdered).
My dad had a friend who was killed with his dog in a hunting accident. The friends wife got permission to get the guy & the dog buried together in the same coffin.
Usually dogs are not allowed in a human cemetery, but they got a special permit.

Coffins are my world as I m a Coffin maker & have a great interest in this subject also I ve made double Coffins in the past. Regarding burial of a double Coffin for 2 adults it s done by buying a large plot 2 graves side by side to enable the burial of an extra largeCoffin Only problem is door ways the Coffin has to pass trough & a hearse. So just use another form of transport for the last journey to the grave. From, Rick O Mortis, THE COFFIN MAKER.

i know (sadly) of two children who were buried together, as their parents didn't want them to be "alone" i'm not sure if a husband and wife can be buried together, but there are extra large coffins/caskets out there and i imagine if they died at the same time, it wouldn't be a big deal to bury them together so it looks as thought they are sleeping/snuggling forever. not only would it be cheaper and more eco friendly (one plot, one non biodegradable casket, etc) it's kind romantic in sad way. if i died in a car accident with my husband, i'd want to be with him like this, not side by side in different caskets. i know i'd be dead so it shouldn't really matter, but...

not sure if they can be buried in the same coffin but i do know they can share the same plot.
my dad's father died before my parents even met and he was buried in El Paso in the military cemetry (don't remember the name) as he was a WWII and Korea vet. In 1996 my dad's mom passed away and she is buried right on top of him. (she was also a WW II vet one of the original WACCs) they even share the same tombstone (one on each side)

there have been double burials but they usually stack the caskets in the some vault if requested not the same casket.
it may vary from one home to the next but i've never heard of what you suggest before.the funeral people have the greatest influence in burial policy and this would go beyond the cost effective limit and probably dignity as well. call a few funeral directors they will be glad to explain policy.

Why not. Extra large Casket, or even better, cremated and both put in same urn. Cremation is way to go, cheaper, much less space and worms won't eat you afterwards.
