For those who say "Bay of Pigs" wasn't a war, you are correct, which is why I put "...and armed conflicts..." in the question. And I was looking for how many Democrats got us into stituations, and wondered how many of you thought they were OK since the President was Democrat...you all missed my point but Bettysdad...

WWI was a Democrat Wilson

WWII was FDR and Truman both Democrat

Korea had both Truman (D) and Eisenhower (R)

Cold War had Truman (D), Eisenhower(R), Kennedy (D), Johnson (D), Nixon (R), Ford (R), Carter (D), and Reagan (R)

Bay of Pigs was not a war where US troops fought so it doesn't count

Vietnam started under Eisenhower (R) was escalated by both Kennedy (D) and Johnson (D) and finished by Nixon (R)

Gulf War had Bush (R)

So if you are just looking at these conflicts there are 6 democrats and five Republicans.

Which party WAS PRESIDENT in all those wars?

The "Cold War" Give me a break! That was no war!
And wasn't it JFK that sent the Russians and their missles packing from Cuba?

The Bay of Pigs was no war! It was a botched CIA operation!

WWI was a dem, Woodrow Wilson,
WW II was a Dem, FDR,
Korea was a dem, Truman
Vietnam was Eisenhower
Persian Gulf, if you want to call that a war. We lost more on Hamburger Hill in 10 days in Vietnam than in that war total!. The Iraqi's just fled! That was Bush! As was Somalia!

World War I: Harry S Truman (D). (Eisenhower served stateside.)

World War II: John F. Kennedy, Lyndon Johnson (D); Dwight Eisenhower, Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, George H.W. Bush (R). (Reagan served stateside.)

Korea: Jimmy Carter (D).

Vietnam: none. (George W. Bush served stateside during this period.)

Bay of Pigs: This wasn't a war by any definition of the term; however, no US President was in the military for this.
Cold War: none that aren't already counted in Vietnam and Korea.
Persian Gulf War: none yet.

Overall:
In the 20th Century (1901-2001), there were 10 Republican Presidents, of whom 5 had active service in the military. There were 7 Democratic presidents, of whom 4 had active military service.

The highest ranking of them was, of course, Dwight Eisenhower, a 5-star General. Of those who served, all did so as officers.

Actually military involment with Vietnam started under Truman. Eisenhower continued with the aid and advisors.

"July 26, 1950 - United States military involvement in Vietnam begins as President Harry Truman authorizes $15 million in military aid to the French.

American military advisors will accompany the flow of U.S. tanks, planes, artillery and other supplies to Vietnam. Over the next four years, the U.S. will spend $3 Billion on the French war and by 1954 will provide 80 percent of all war supplies used by the French."

i assume you will say the Democrats. i'm not brushed up on my history, so I won't dispute you. I advise, i be attentive to that FDR exchange into the guy for WWII, yet i'm uncertain on the others. besides the undeniable fact that, I ought to declare "so what"? maximum wars have been in step with truths and popular information. there is one conflict that happened those days that alter into in step with lies and manipulation. Oh, wait, we are nonetheless interior the direction of that conflict, probably for the subsequent two decades.

Bob Dole used to rail about "Democrat wars." Like all Republicans, he was either a liar or ignorant.

As the first answerer laid out, it's pretty much even. But if you add The Iraq war, it's 6-6.
