Nixon pulled out of vietnam after congress cut funding, not because of any personal conviction.

You're confusing patriotism with blind obedience. I had lunch with Stevie Ray Vaughn, that doesn't make me a expert on the blues. If I buy a PHD on the internet, am I a doctor? If you've stolen an officew, do you get the title president? Ford, clinton, and carter were elected!

I rejected Nixon and Vietnam. I protested, though I never called our troops names. I thought that was shameful, even back then. Our generation was so outraged, so naive and so sure we really could change the world. No doubt public outrage contributed to the end of the Vietnam War, but the real hard and cold reason it came to an end was because the funding was cut. Most of the people I know that are old enough to remember Vietnam are not for this war. Some have changed their minds and used to be supportive of the Iraq War, and some were against it from the beginning, but the fact is that the majority of them see very clearly now and they don't like what they see. I cannot even feature thinking Bush and Cheney and my entire generation think alike. We do not, and right now Bush and his supporters represent the minority of our generational opinion. At least they do in the area of the country I live in, which is the Midwest.
EDIT: I must respectfully disagree with bettysdad about protesters not harrassing returning soldiers. I witnessed this several times myself. I never saw a soldier spit on, but I did hear them called baby killers and murderers. I listened to people at gatherings talk smack about the returning soldiers on a regular basis, especially after My Lai. I was only 13 in 1968, but I remember very clearly my cousin's "friends" getting drunk and harrassing him about how many ***** he murdered and raped after he returned from Vietnam. Some of our protesters back then were not all about peace and love. Many were angry and violent and spit out some pretty nasty accusations and names - and many times at the people who didn't deserve it - the soldiers.

I don't think that's true. Bush only got 50.0001 %of the vote the first time and 51% the second time. Right now he only has a 32% approval.
PS Nixon DID NOT get the troops out of Viet Nam, he escalated the war and invaded Cambodia, the troops were withdrawn under Ford after Nixon resigned in disgrace.
I am in that generation and I never backed Bush

The turning aspect for the Vietnam conflict became even as Nixon requested the Joint Chiefs of team what the plan became to win the conflict. even as they spoke back that there became no plan, Nixon determined adequate became adequate. compared, even as being interviewed for the job of commanding the ecu theatre for international conflict 2, Eisenhower reached into his briefcase and presented a plan he'd drawn up. It became an incredible and extremely precise procedure action that he'd created on his own initiative. He became quite the perfect candidate, and he did get the job executed.

Sorry but I volunteered for Nixon & had lunch with his daughter, Tricia when I was only 16 yrs old. I support President Bush (that is what a patriot calls our sitting president - you know like President Clinton, President Carter, President Ford & etc.) & have tried to support even some of the low lives that have been elected including President Nixon & President Clinton (1 of 2 presidents to ever be impeached - that would be Clinton not Nixon as he resigned). Vietnam went bad , but we should have learned the cut & run practice does not work, remember Vietnam is communist & our soldiers died for nothing. Nixon did pull the troops out & we know Congress does not have the authority to bring the troops home. They can bluster but not rewrite the Constitution & seperation of powers. They try though.
I have learned what a sad excuse of patriotism we show the world in our constant & unrelenting criticism of our President, military & countrymen. Whew! I feel better.

That generation is in their 50's now .. and I certainly don't support the Bush Administration. What concerns me is that the college kids on campus are not demonstrating like they did in 1968 - 1972. All the rich kids don't care anymore .. they have it made in life .. they don't care about basic laws of the people anymore. The other kids are too poor to go to college. Bush and the Neo-right Repub. have done a very good job at wiping out the middle class. You either have or you don't. Don't get me started on Bush. His war for profit. The so called Patriot Act .. that if people knew what was written in that damn thing SHOULD be shouting out the windows. The word, Democracy, barely lives in USA anymore. Everyone has traded it in for the governments "protection" of the citizens. Welcome to "1984" .. enjoy it while you can. Do you remember what George Orwell said in the book ? War Is Peace, Ignorance Is Strength .. think about it !!!

Your premise is wrong.
We aging hippies were a small minority. Opposition to the war was not even 50%. So with opposition to the war at over 70% theres a whole lotta people that didn't protest Vietnam that are protesting Bush.
BTW - this bs about protesters hassling vets is just that. BS.
And the stories about the vet getting spit on has never been verified despite 35 years of trying. Someone always says they know someone who knows someone whose brother got spat on. No one has ever said "I was spat on."

No it is not interesting it is down right dangerous.
It has changed because that generation have fallen into the trap
of believing that the U.S. is the country with all the answers.
They expected too much of Nixon and they are expecting too much of Bush.Presidents don't have all the answers.

The Collage kids aren't demonstrating about this war because it was all about the DRAFT and those that didn't want to fight a nonsense war .
That's what got everyone upset .
There is no draft today and everyone thinks that the troops want to be there , so why demonstrate

Nixon was one in a billion. He won the second election by a landslide and was so paranoid that he authorized the Watergate break in. Viet Nam was a war that was waged without having victory as a goal. Duh? sounds familiar.
Well, history repeats itself and we never learn from the lessons of history. And we never will.
