I did a Japanese style. I searched around and found a plastic fish-friendly bonsai tree. I also got what I call a grass mat at PetSmart. I put the grass mat down and covered it with natural colored gravel so that the grass was sticking up half way out of the gravel. I put the bonsai tree in the corner with a large air stone under it so the bubbles could come up through the top of the tree. I put a background that had grass like the mat on the back and added a couple of plastic fish-friendly bamboo stalks in the other corner and that was it.

You're kinda close on the capacity of the tank. Get a 6-in-one test kit and monitor it closely when you add the last of the fish. If things are stable and everything is ok, then you're fine and can relax and just do your usual weekly maintenance. If things spike a bit, you might want to go with more filtration (larger filter with good media surface area for the nitrifying bacteria to grow on or jump to a larger tank. But as for compatibility, you're fine and you ought to be ok.

i really don't see u being able to make a cichilid tank with a ten gallon, unless you are using some blue ram, cuckatoo ram, or bolivian, or a very small keyhole. Some good small fish are bumble bee gobies, endler's, chocolate gourami, or honey gourami, hatchets. However you could do a amazon theme will alot different small tetras. for inverts you could try mts and ghost shrimp

Cool, this project of yours sounds like fun! Go for something really awesome. I would glam it all up with mini crowns and a bit of bling bling it would look so cool. You could try maybe an animal theme with little animals all through the tank!
Sounds like fun and Good Luck, Kelly

Zombie theme! My first suggestion would have been pirate, but its taken. Or better yet, Ninjas. You could fill the tank with those fun fighting fish and have them fight in a dojo. that would be sweet. I dont really know how one would do a zombie theme, so go ninjas.

i have a sushi theme. in general all my tanks are oriental themes. buddhas, asian teacups, sake bottles, bamboo, the sushi one has my goldfish (all named after sushi) and sushi plates and chopsticks. all the plates have chinese calligraphy on them.
cichlids are african and south american -- how about going with an african or south american theme? you can get aztec calendars made out of resin or something like that. that could work. african gods would be kind of cool. you could get stone carved african heads on ebay or something.
for brackish you could do a harbor theme -- like boats and lighthouses. thats kind of christopher lowell does fishtanks though. forget that one.

you could heavily plant it and turn it into a "swamp" and maybe get a couple of those african dwarf frogs, and a bunch of snails. or you could make it a saltwater theme even if its a freshwater tank. you could buy those decor things from pet stores, and get some little fake clams with "pearls" in them (could be white marbles). or you could go with that ninja idea [=

put allot of plants in it , I have a corner of my 40 gallon planted , and it provides another filter (eats fish waste as fertilizer) , is attractive , gives ample hiding places.
You can see my tank at http://www.bridgewatertaekwondo.com/Aquarium.html
and it is predominantly a cichlid tank
