Hmmm. Interesting question. From what I understand, most people who "need to be" in an institution (and I think this would be mainly for their own safety) don't recognize the "need". Personally, I'm kind of ambivalent about "mental institutions" and having people "committed". I am also not thrilled by the stories of over-medication that I read about on Yahoo! Answers... this is a great place to see what is really happening "out there" and it would seem that the docs and Big Pharma are in their prescribing heyday.
I believe that if someone is feeling a great deal of anxiety and feeling that they are 'going off the deepend' that they would be best served to begin by seeking their nearest and dearest (family supports); then looking at means of dealing with stress and unbalance with non-SSRI methods (nutrition, lifestyle, etc.) and respectful and effective alternative or integrative (meaning that the allopathic medical system makes referrals to the alternative system when it is appropriate) medicine. The method that I would suggest would be the Emotional Freedom Technique. It is roundly acknowledged-- by many leading scientists (Dr. Candace Pert, for example) and by MDs, Psychologists and holistic practitioners-- to be an effective, non-invasive, easy-to-learn, easy-to-appy technique for alleviating stress and anxiety and many dis-eases that would normally be labeled as "mental illnesses". You can download the free Get Started Package at http://tinyurl.com/yh5zhu and try it yourself. If you need additional help there are practitioners listed on the site, and other resources. It would be my first line of fire for anyone who asked if they should be institutionalized. Thanks.
Peace in 2007!

Well, they can't take you against your will unless you are a danger to yourself or others. So, if you have any question about it, and you can get it paid for... go ahead and check yourself in. No harm can be done by that, and you're free to leave. You can ask for a guardian ad litem (a court-assigned attorney) or a mental health professional to look out for your best interests if you want (I certainly wouldn't go in without one).
The paperwork can be confusing, so make sure you understand it. But you might come out of there stronger and better. A stitch in time saves nine, so they say.

Believe me, you do not want to be institutionalized. I worked at a mental health facility in the State of Illinois. I resigned, because I did not want to be a part of a group of organized bullies who torture and abuse patients. Yes, it DOES happen. I was supposed to be a security provider, as were all the other security personnel in my group. But, almost every one was involved in taunting and provoking patients, just so they had a reason to beat on them. Please do not get yourself institutionalized.

i wager by technique of 'locked up' you advise mandatory detention because of psychological health? it truly is in common words a very last motel, if you're a intense probability to your self or others because of your psychological health. Psychs a lot opt to artwork with you on searching an valuable treatment. in case you sense your GP is threatening then you definately change your GP - you want someone you may believe. although, any healthcare professional has the accountability to take action to save you secure in the experience that they sense that suicide is a intense and close threat for you. Being a voluntary in-affected individual (determining on to bypass into health center for a time) might want to correctly be triumphant to judge you in detail, save you secure, and attempt diverse treatments more effective straight away than in case you've been an out-affected individual. having said that many elements have community depending help which could help without the want to bypass into health center - there's a mess of stress on health center places and that is a lengthy way more effective expensive than community depending treatment, so that is in no-one's interest to emphasise you to bypass into health center till that is major keep your existence. community depending help (interior the united kingdom besides) regularly starts with a psychiatric evaluation to make your ideas up the help and treatment you want. I have found the psychiatrists some distance more effective valuable than GPs. they have some distance more effective in-intensity understand-how and adventure, and are dealing with tests of threat familiar so can positioned your indications in context. Plus they are up to this point with drug treatments and combos, and are in a position to prescribe a much wider type of drugs than GPs.

There is the DSIM, a diagnostic tool that psychiatrists use to decide on the mental health of a patient. The best way is to talk to a psychologists/psychiatrist.

You do not know, and neither does anyone else. A person with a Degree can suggest or order you to be. Seek a Doctors help, let them determine if you should be committed.

If you have persistant thoughts of wanting to hurt yourself or others and you have thought about ways to carry out these thoughts, it could be helpful for everyone concerned that you be hospitalized for a while, while medications can begin to restor a chemical balance to your brain.
if you hear voices, see hallucinations, or have strong paranoid ideation, hospitalization could be helpful while you are diagnosed and set up with services and meds.
Good luck.

Are you hearing voices that aren't really there? Do you feel thoughts are being taken away or put into your mind? Do you feel that someone is controlling you through your mind and that you have no control over it?
