Basically all the ic memory chips are either on one side or both sides of the memory card. Both sides are usually double the capacity of the single side.

The memory may be on a small board. 1GB of memory could be on one DIMM chipset b oard, or split into two.

If the laptop allows two, you could always buy extra. If two are filled, you have to throw both out and buy both new to upgrade
