Try "Heloise's Boric Acid Roach Exterminating Formula." In Japan, we call it "Roaches Balls (ゴキブリ団子)."

You won't see any roaches after placing the boric acid balls throughout your house.

Dogs are not the problem. Roaches come in the house through small cracks and openings around the prerimeter of your house. Make sure all of those are sealed up. We fixed the threshold under our kitchen door and our roach problem was solved. I live in the South and roaches are just a fact of life. No matter how clean you keep your house you are always going to see a roach every once in a while. If you are killing a roach once or twice a week then you really don't have a big problem. If it is a lot more than that then you need to seal up the cracks and hire an exterminator.

I'm sorry I don't have a better answer than those before me, but I feel your pain. BTW, the comment about Godzilla cracked me up. One thing to remember is that roaches really like wood so if you are in a wooden building, you're going to have them. The Japanese like roaches so your neighbors probably don't consider it a problem, unfortunately. In addition to all the above advice, get those little roach motels. I used them faithfully when I lived in a place in Japan that had roaches. They are like little cardboard houses that have flypaper inside. I had to get a friend to throw them out, though. They come with roach food that you put inside and it attracts the roaches, who get stuck to the flypaper. Good luck to you!

I lived in Japan, and my very first day there, I saw that roach! It was huge! I had to smash it, then I had to buy screening and put it over every crevice to the outside (the in-wall air conditioner, for instance).

[ADDED] Yeah, fill that space above the cabinet with a thin board or something, then seal/caulk it.

When I was in the orient the roach population was kept at bay by the gehko population. The people had them in the house to keep the roachs out.

You should also go to your local Home Improvement Store and buy some Roach Killer Spray and spray near openings of doors , windows , underneath your sinks , and also you should spray around your home also ( outside ) , if you live in an apartment it is hard to get rid of them especially if your neighbors have them , just stay consistant and you will eventually win the battle !!

Good Luck !

The best way to keep roaches away from your house is to put some charcoal ashes around the edge of the building. Make sure that the ashes are moist enough so that it will stick to the edges.

Boric acid, it is very effective when used properly for killing cockroaches and most other insects. You can also get a house lizard, they are natural enemies and will eat them. More information at http://tinyurl.com/ofxkk

Boric acid will help keep them away. It is a powder that you sprinkle in areas where they are at. It sticks to them when they walk through it and kills them. Also works with firebrats and other insects.
