I started in airfreight, was contracted to Emery Worldwide, had operating authority in 16 states, etc.

Retired from freight, but I can definitely point you in the right direction.

it just doesn't work that way you can't walk into a shipper and expect them to hand there freight over to you. I am assuming you have semi trucks and trailers so this is the scenario,
You have to call Transportation and Logistics companies, and try to sign on with them as an independent contractor, you must have insurance and you must be reliable. That is the easiest, quickest way to start in the freight hauling business. Shippers for the most part (especially if they are national brands) have contracts with Logistics Companies and Transportation companies already or they have persons on site that handle the freight shipments and they have a carrier base and are not going to risk it with a unknown 2 truck operation. Think about it, would you just hand over 1000's of dollars to someone you didn't know and expect them to deliver it across Country? probably not and that is basically what you are doing. Your best bet is to get involved with a major carrier and get freight from them and then work your way up.

some to try:

These are just a very small handful, there are tons more.

the trucking industry is not hard to figure out. The things I would have to know to answer this question properly is: do you have your own authority or are you relying on the company to help with plates, insurance and fuel surcharge? If you have your own, then you don't have to rely on any one company or contract. u will be able to secure and find your own freight without having help from a company. If you don't have your own authority, then you are limited to the freight and companies you will be able to pull for that can assist you with your truck.
