the light will reset after the computer checks the system. it will usually take 2 drive cycles, complete warm up from a cold start, and the proper driving conditions being met for the computer to run it's checks and reset the light. if you disconnect the battery, you clear the entire memory. the vehicle may not run or shift correctly for awhile until it goes through a relearn procedure. if the vehicle was repaired correctly, the light will go off. give it a couple of days. i do this for a living and have not cleared a computer in a couple of years. just drive it so the computer runs it's monitor checks and you will be fine. if you disconnect the battery, make sure you have any radio codes and your presets recorded so you can reinstall them.

If the problem is fixed you can either unplug the battery for at least a half hour to clear the codes, or take it to someone with a code reader to delete it. Most auto part stores will have this tool and do it for free. If you do decide to unplug the battery then remember that it will take a little while during driving for the computer to relearn some of its data. This takes at least fifteen minutes of driving.

If you've made the repair, unplug the battery for about 10-20 minutes, re-attach it and start the car. The computer should've reset. If it goes off and then comes back on, then the problem just isn't fixed.

The garage has to turn it off. I don't know about a Pontiac but with a Honda you can use your key to turn it off. Call up a garage and have it looked at, if you already did service to it call the dealership and ask how to turn it off.

Go by any Autozone, Advanced Auto Parts, O'Reilly, or any other large parts store and they will clear the code that is causing the light to come on.

The service engine is just a reminder to have it serviced for it's regular maintenance....the "check engine" light is the one to worry about.
Just disconnect the ground on the battery for few minutes an reattach it....it should go away.

Depending on the car sometime the light will go off on it's on and about 80% of the time you have to go to the dealership and have them to turn it off.
