They should ask each customer option whether to get listed in Directory, address, business category, sub category etc. For BSNL customers it is great benefit to call free all 41 lacs listed phone holders free for only Rs.111 monthly within Gujarat.

This is only for security reasons.. thery have all the details but they dont provide to other people.. also the marketing (such as telecallers) will get numbers easily for sales promotion which will be resulted in disturbance in privacy of the consumers.. they only provide the necessary information to the Police only for specific reason.. however they sales details of customer's numbers and address to marketing companies for their own benefit but this is illegal

They don't have directories in order to protect the consumers from unnecessary missed calls and calls from unnecessary people. We all get wrong numbers on our landlines and also mobiles but the frequency is much higher in the former case.

Well for cell phones, we pay for the minutes we use. Therefore if we were to get a lot of solicitors and sales people calling us, we would loose minutes and its really not fair to sell someone minutes when they can't use them. Its different for land phones because you usually don't pay by the minute.
