I was looking in my Programs tab and saw a program called xVid and the info for it said something about, "building on my computer" and codec. Then I went to another user on my PC/ Program files/ Lame mp3 codec. I don't know what that is either or how it got there or what it does. Help!

A codec is a package which contains both the
Decoder
and
Encoder

What this means is that you NEED a codec to decode a file, which means it will allow you to view the file.

There are a number of VIDEO/AUDIO files requiring CODEC's to view, such as the DivX / XviD format, H264 etc.

The Encoder portion of it allows you to actually create files of that sort, eg. you can encode a XviD video compressed file because you have installed a codec pack for XviD

same applies for Lame mp3, it allows you to encode mp3's

i recommend downloading this codec pack, it'll allow you to view all media files

and the following

codecs are not a bad thing. They just allow you to view Media files of that sort.

Hi there....

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Codec

From the page:

"A codec is a device or program capable of performing encoding and decoding on a digital data stream or signal. The word codec may be a combination of any of the following: 'Compressor-Decompressor', 'Coder-Decoder', or 'Compression/Decompression algorithm'."

In other words, to play an mp3 or a divx file, you need the proper audio or video codec....
