Aren’t cats wonderful little creatures?
My cat, a 14 year old female tabby, does numerous little rituals all day long and I have no idea how she learned them. The older she gets, the more rituals. Her food is in the kitchen but she will never eats unless I am also in the kitchen. She will always eat a bite when I go in the kitchen during the day (to get a snack, a drink or whatever), even if that means for her to get off from wherever she was to just go in the kitchen and have a bite because I am in the kitchen (her dry food is always there). It is funny to see her half awake, having a bite, like a soldier on duty. Every morning, she is just there, at the feet of my bed, standing in the dark, like a statue, waiting for me to get up so she can escort me to my bathroom, a few yards away. When I’m done brushing my teeth and my hair, she goes into my bathroom where she does a thorough inspection and rub her nose on everything, purring like crazy. Then, she escorts me to the kitchen where she eats a little bite. She follows me everywhere in the house, rubbing against my legs until I actually sit down for breakfast. If I do not go into the kitchen in the morning because I have something to do on the computer and breakfast can wait, she comes directly between me and my computer. She just goes on my desk (where she never goes on except in that occasion) and stands just in front on my computer screen, trying to remind me that I forgot my breakfast. And yes, if I am working on any papers, she will just, as you said with your cat, plop down on them.
About once a week, she does a thorough inspection of the house and I am always thankful when she does it during the day and not at night, otherwise it surely awakes me. She goes everywhere, in every closets and corners, scratching and moving stuff around. I call it the mice inspection. I never had any mice unlike a friend of mine who has numerous dogs but no cats and has mice eating her cereals and the food in her pantry and leaving disgusting droppings everywhere…). In fact, I do not have really anything in the house except my cat. She’s the perfect natural insecticide, the ultimate predator of all critters. Sometimes, if you happen to look at the right second, you can see her eat a cricket or whatever.
When a big electric storm is coming, you know it before the weather channel because you see her going furtively into her favorite hiding place (so you unplug whatever you can). When you see her again, you know you can plug everything back in.
When I move something and make a mess somewhere, she will indeed, like your cat, go sleep on the mess. I think it is a way of marking her territory. It is like she’s saying: that was not there before but I will acknowledge that pile of junk and just sleep uncomfortably on top of it to make it mine. So she ends up sleeping on a pile of old archive files that I decided to shred and recycle.
You do not own a cat. The cat owns you.
The master or the cat…the master is the cat.

That's adorable! I have 2 cats and 1 has these same habbits, the second I open a dresser drawer, he jumps in it, sleeps on the hamper, under the curio, ontop the litter box, on the dryer when it's running and likes to find the highest places. His name is Booger, go figure....he's the best thing I've ever found on the side of the road!

I know exactly what you're talking about- I have always had cats, i love them, at this time i only have 2 and yes they do the strangest and funniest things, sometimes i try to tell my co-workers those little things that cats do that we find adorable or amusing but of course they never get it-- Only another cat lover can understand!
How adorable can they be when they get in the way of your reading.. Seriously, sometimes im laying in bed reading a book and one of them just comes right in front of the book and settles right in the middle or if im doing some kind of paperwork and have books and papers laying around they will get right on top of one of them keeping me from finishing whatever im doing... ha ha-- Too funny...
My cats also have a habit of going on top of the refrigerator or the china cabinets, they like to get inside the grocery bags, inside the draws if God forbid i leave one open.. Oh my God the list just goes on and on..... But once night comes, they know better- they sleep in my bed with me, one of them specially loves to sleep on top of my feet, which btw keeps me from sleeping comfortable (i have a fat cat) but i dont care- i love the warmth and love they give me!

Your cat must be feeling a little insecure...are you giving him enough attention? Play with him and his toys a few minutes everyday... then again, Cats are always in "their" own world which can be as why people say they can be strange...or maybe the spoiling part is getting to his head, so that he thinks that he can get whatever he wants and when he wants...The last cat I've had, was always sleeping in odd places...one time he was sleeping in one of my western boots and I almost put my foot over him...happy? he wasn't....he bit my toe and was nervous enough to pee... and he did, in my boot....so much for the stetson boots! LOL.

If you have a flashlight, shine it on the floor or on wall and watch as the cat goes "hunting". turn the light off just as the cat reaches the light spot and watch the perplexed kitty look around wondering what the heck happened.

My cat likes to sleep - and shed - on the shelf where I keep the warm, freshly laundered bath towels. It's very annoying to have to re-wash towels that just came out of the dryer a mere hour before!
