I have remembered weird weather every since I was a child.Freak snow storm here, tornado there hot when its suppose to be cold ,cold when its suppose to be hot..Hurricanes bunches in one year then five years without ..Freak rain and hail storms and everyting and anything. Most people I have talked to remember the same things..Not really that big of a deal.. Even in history there are countless freak strorms and weather systems..So why does everybody now say GREENHOUSE gases and crap? That is the funniest thing that I have ever heard. When I was growing up nobody even thought about greenhouse gases..they said its just mother earth changing.and if you read centuries ago before pollutants or the massive amounts we have dumped in the air they had the same weather.Whats with everybody..and the Freaks show"IT COULD HAPPEN TOMMOROW" Weirdos man.. These people don't realize it did happen and has happened and will continue to happen.Dont you remember things like this when u were young? Its normal!

Actually on reading the answers I have recieved so far.Its not a debate here..Im just saying well its always seemed weird even before we started polluting in recorded history .As for greenhouse affects..its all a bunch of bull. The earth has polluted itself with Mt St Helens and Mt Pinatubo with more greenhouses gases than we ever could put in the air..Its getting ready for a major climate change and thats what the earth does..it has happened this way since the earth's birth..Its ever changing weather and climate ,doesn't anyone realize that? Also the weather hasn't gotten weird lately its always been weird off and on and growing up nobody pointed fingers they just tried to make like as bearable as they could..Its so funny what the media pumps into our brains and its all what I call media propaganda but my real question is doesn't anyone else always remember the weather being different off and on but me?

I believe there is an answer to this perplexing observation of yours and others who have responded to your question. We know that something we now call chaos or chaos theory may be the cause. You may remember James Gleick's book "Chaos - Making a New Science" published in 1987. This author, in the first chapter of his book entitled The Butterfly Effect gives Dr. Ed Lorenz of MIT the credit for having "discovered" this world of nonlinearity. This explains, for example, why even the best numerical prediction models on the planet begin to fail miserably at around 14 days. There is chaos in the atmosphere which helps create weather events with a randomness that in time becomes visible to all who take note of the weather. I hope this helps a little.

I posed a question not too long ago about this whole ice age/greenhouse effect thing. I contend that what is happening to the ozone probably is true, but what is happening with the weather is a natural order of things.

Back when I was a kid in the 50's and 60's, I remember some really rough winters. When it snowed in southern Ohio, it snowed!! I can't say we had snow every Christmas, but, by golly, we had our share. And when it did snow, it usually stayed on for a long time. Summers were about the same as now, I guess, hot and hotter.

The climate has changed considerably since I was a kid. Winter was winter and cold stayed on for a long time. Now, at least, in Southern Illinois, it gets cold for a while then it is warm. I expect we will have some zero weather in Feb, but there is a chance we won't. This time last year it was brutally cold. Tomorrow it is supposed to be in the 40's.

You are right on with your analysis. It might be warm now, but next year we could get slammed with snow just like folks out west got this year. Course, it ain't over till the fat lady sings.

I agree with you to an extent, changes in the weather are normal the earth's temperature does increase, good thing to or we'd still be having an ice age. I think why people are so anxious about our possible impact on that is that we are beginning to realise that our action does affect the weather. When there was a large forest fire close to us the wind increased, I remember when I was a kid it was nearly always foggy on 6th November because in those days lots of people had fireworks at home and it was always on 5th. Unfortunately it seems we can only make the weather worse not better and it's making us nervous. Good thing too really because we ought to be aware of the impact we are having on our environment. Not on the planet note, I think the only reason we are still here is the planet hasn't noticed us yet, but we are affecting the environment we have to live in so if we want to keep living in it we should try and keep it clean.

The whole 'climate change' thing is not a FACT, it is a HYPOTHESIS, based on computer modelling. Today, here in the UK, the BBC are banging on about the subject because they have run an experiment using a lot of linked computers (including mine at one time) to try and show what is going to happen to the weather. They are having to call it an 'experiment' with 'predictions' Remember; the guy who invented 'global warming' was banging on at one time about a new ice age happening before the end of the 20th century; there are predictions about the 'North Atlantic Conveyor Belt' breaking down (ever see the movie, 'The Day after Tomorrow'?); they tell us the ice cap on Antarctica is melting - but it has been in parts for 6000 years; they tell us the Greenland icecap is melting, but forget to tell us it only covered the whole island in historic times - the advance of the ice in the 12th century was one of the reasons the Viking settlers there had to leave; between about the late 1940s and early 1970 C02 emissions went up, but overall global warming went down - which tends to show to me that there is not the direct casual link between the two things that they would have us believe.

OK - Up here in Vancouver Land Canada we have been experiencing pretty strange weather too - 14 differing storms within a 1 1/2 month period. However - I too have witnessed much of the same ups & downs over the last 50 years. In fact, our Newspaper ran an article today describing the same extremes in the early 1900's - so go figure - I remember building snowmen and dealing with the "shock&awe" of a hurricane in the Province described as Lotus Land - go figure

I am only in my mid-thirties but I remember winters warm enough to wear shorts and my mom says she remembers snow in June. As a matter of fact, in February 2000 before my son was born we had one week so warm I was wishing I had bought maternity shorts. The day I was in Labor I was wearing a sweat suit with no coat at the end of February. One week later we had a snow storm. I have come to the conclusion that mother nature just what ever she feels like at the time. This year in Indiana is not so much warmer than it has been. It is only the 5th warmest winter recorded. The record high in December where I live is in the 70's. We haven't even come close to that since early October. So yes, your are not the only one who remembers weird weather

Thank you! Just what I've secretly been thinking for a while, myself. Very encouraging and reassuring. I believe it's being used to make a case for major reforms, which will keep the economy going (switching an entire planet to non-polluting stuff may be unnecessary if what you say is right, but at least it'll give us something to do).
So, to answer your question: Dollars.

That is an interesting idea. I know there are scientists on both sides that debate the whole issue. I guess time will tell who is right.

Nobody thought about it then because they used diesel fuel and were still thrilled about the idea of a color television set.
