Well, if you're looking for history, the answer is that documented history in North America is a wee 400 years old. By the time Europeans settled here, so much had taken place in terms of academia, science, warfare, and cultural conflict in the rest of the world that never occurred here. After settlement, however, the young U.S. blazed a trail for modern democracies by writing the model for all constitutions.
If you're looking for a more substantial answer, that deals more with anthropology. There is conflicting evidence of the time period in which North America was settled by humans (there are South American sites that pre-date the suspected 12,500 y.a. migration over the Bering Land Bridge. Humans had to deal with a lack of big game and a lack of protein source, and technological advances and large settlements trailed the Eastern world usually by thousands of years. So much more could be said here...

Its a newfound continent.... culture is influenced mostly by the europians ... so US history is closely knit with europian history .... but there are a lot of things that you can consider after the seventeenth century of america....
