The most obvious answer that comes to mind is that it helped demonstrate to the nation at large and the world watching that we really BELIEVE that all men are created equal, and deserving of both respect and sympathy. We still haven't eradicated the mental disease of racism, but we've come a long way since the 50s.
I believe that the civil rights movement has enlightened people of ALL races/nationalities, including the blacks, themselves. There are far more college graduates and business owners now than there were 50 years ago.
Do I attribute a lot of that to the civil rights movement?

it ended de jure racism. also, by allowing blacks to enter mainstream institution, the civil rights brought about the demise of many black institutions.

Theoretically, it gave Blacks the same legal rights as Whites.
But it didn't end racism, as any Black person will tell you, and as recent Republican campaign ads show.
